Students will benefit by going on-line to the Institute of Medicine . Read about the purpose of the IOM and its major activities. Then read the executive summaries of two IOM studies:
1988 Future of Public Health Jan 1988
and the follow up 2003 book: Future of Public Health in the 21st Century
Scan Healthy People 2010 but focus on the goals
Then look at the CDC’s center for
HIV/STD/TB Prevention
and The Center for Chronic Disease Prevention.
Also, look at the information on the other centers and programs at the CDC to get a broad view of the myriad of activities of the CDG which promote and extend the reach and action of state health agencies.
Having completed these tasks take another look at the Healthy People goals in the UK and also another look at Health Canada and examine the goals and plan for the future. Also look at the Canadian Health Care System .
At this point you should be able to write a short discussion (not more than 200 words) on your understanding of the role of the CDC in promoting health & preventing disease. You may wish to place such a dsicussion on the Discussion Forum for review and comment by your peers.
