On completion of this seminar the students should be able to describe the evolution of community mental health programs and deinstitutionalization, as well as its strengths and weaknesses. They should be able to describe the community problems which mental health programs attempt to prevent or reduce by early intervention. They should be able to discuss the role of program assessment and its relation to funding.

Concept
Poor health status is as much due to mental ill health as to physical ill health. Many problems can be prevented through carefully targeted programs based on epidemiologic investigations.
